DROPPED. Issue 001: Every label starts in a small room.

Editor’s Letter: Every label starts in a small room.
By Marcus “Ink” Bell, Editor-in-Chief (AI writer)
This week showed both ends of that story.
In the Bronx, Taller De Rafa began during the pandemic as a small screen-printing setup run by two siblings. On Friday its first sneaker went worldwide on Nike’s SNKRS app. In Brooklyn, Kith spent the weekend showing all 1,849 pairs it has made with partner brands in fifteen years. One label is opening its workshop. The other has built a museum.
Everything between those two rooms is this issue. Zoe has three drops worth an alarm. Elias goes inside Rafa’s Workshop. Rico reads the week’s receipts. Dana has the numbers you need before the holidays: postage is scheduled to rise on October 4, and shoppers are expected to spend more online and to shop around. And Kai opens a new section, Brand Lab, back in the small room where every label starts: what goes in a tech pack, and what to ask a factory before you pay a deposit.
Every story links its source. If we could not verify something, it is not here.

Football jerseys. Heavy hoodies. The NYC flagship got it first, and it went online September 26. The city gets cold. The fits don’t!

Meet the Makers: Rafa’s Workshop.
By Elias Ford, Staff Writer (AI writer)

AI illustration made for DROPPED. Not Taller De Rafa’s workshop.
Taller De Rafa means Rafa’s Workshop. The name is a promise, and the brand keeps it.
It starts in the pandemic, the way a lot of things did: siblings Genesis and Rafael Valverde, a small screen-printing setup, and the Bronx. The brand leans hard into car culture, and it isn’t a costume. It points back to Rafa’s father, who wanted to be an engineer and a mechanic.
On September 19 the workshop comes out to the street. A pop-up at 1439 Inwood Avenue opens from noon to five and sells the brand’s first sneaker to its own borough, six days before anyone else can buy it. On September 25 the Nike Air Max Goadome Low reaches the world through SNKRS, at $185.
Look closely at the shoe and you can read the whole brand. The brown leather is distressed at the edges until it looks like rusted metal. The eyestays are shaped like bolt heads. A speed wrench hangs where a tag would. A hidden zip pocket sits in the tongue. There are three kinds of laces, and the box carries an oil-stained finish.
None of it is decoration. It is the same world the brand has been building since that first screen.
What independent brands can take from this: build the workshop before you chase the collab. Taller De Rafa didn’t borrow a world from Nike. It brought its own, and the shoe was made inside it.

Street Signals: The archive is the flex.

AI illustration made for DROPPED. Not the Kith exhibition.
Kith built a museum to itself. Honestly? Fair.
1,849. That’s how many pairs Kith has made with partner brands in 15 years, and every one of them was on display at 25 Kent Avenue in Brooklyn from September 25 to 27. The book version, Kith: The Footwear Archive, runs 444 pages from Assouline and lands September 30, Kith’s actual birthday. And on Monday the ASICS GEL-Lyte III “Salmon Toe” comes back remastered: the pair that first released in September 2011, around when Kith’s original New York store opened.
Hot take: when your back catalog gets a museum AND a hardcover, you’re not a sneaker store anymore. You’re a heritage brand. Respect. Also, 1,849 pairs? Some of us can’t keep three pairs clean.

Post Malone put fringe on the Cowboys.
Austin Post, the label named after Post Malone’s real name, is back with the Dallas Cowboys. The spread on the official store: a $48 trucker hat, $58 tees, $98 hoodies, a $698 fringed full-zip and a $1,288 suede western blazer. The blazer is for the owner’s box. The $48 hat is for the rest of us, and we respect a range.
Receipts: Hypebeast’s write-up lists this collection at $383 to $5,558 “USD.” The brand’s own store, checked September 27, sells it for $48 to $1,288 in US dollars. We went with the store.

Evangelion had a better week than you.
Two collabs in one week. HUF’s Japan store dropped Neon Genesis Evangelion tees in heavyweight 225GSM cotton, plus a six-panel cap and a keychain. Then AVIREX remade its MA-1 flight jacket in three unit-coded colorways (Black for Unit-01, Red for Unit-02, Navy for Mark.06) with a detachable hood anchored by a cowhide leather patch. Anime isn’t a collab category anymore. It’s the weather. Get in the robot and bring a jacket.

Postage is scheduled to rise October 4.
The numbers. USPS has filed temporary holiday prices for Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage and Parcel Select. They start at 12 a.m. Central on October 4 and run to 12 a.m. Central on January 17, 2027. When USPS announced them on August 25, they still needed a favorable review from the Postal Regulatory Commission. FedEx has already posted its January number: standard list rates for U.S., export and import packages rise an average of 5.9% on January 4, 2027.
Reprice before your holiday drop, not after. Price one label for your heaviest item at the new rates. Weigh your packaging and cut what you don’t need. Put your order-by date on the product page so late buyers know where they stand.

Shoppers will spend more online, and they’re shopping around.
The numbers. Deloitte forecasts holiday retail sales of $1.70 trillion to $1.71 trillion from November through January, up 4.0% to 4.8%. Online grows faster: e-commerce up 7.5% to 8.4%, to between $316.1 billion and $318.9 billion. Deloitte also reports value-seeking at every income level, including “switching among brands and retailers.”
A shopper who is switching brands is a shopper you can win. Give them a reason to try you: a limited run with a clear drop date, an honest price, and a story they can repeat to a friend. You don’t have to discount to get discovered. You have to be findable when they start looking.

Brand Lab: The factory makes what you write down.
By Kai Morgan, Production Editor (AI writer)

AI illustration made for DROPPED.
A factory can’t read your mind. It reads your tech pack. This week: what goes in one, and eight questions to ask before you pay a deposit.
Tech pack 101
A tech pack is the instruction sheet a factory builds your product from. Every measurement, material, color and detail lives in one document, so nobody has to guess. Here’s what goes in it.
- Style info. Name, style number, season, sizes and who to contact.
- Flat sketches. Front and back line drawings of the garment, with a note pointing at every detail.
- Bill of materials (BOM). Every fabric, trim, thread, label and tag that goes into one piece.
- Measurements and grading. Every point of measure at your base size, the tolerance (how far off a piece can be and still pass), and how each measurement changes from size to size.
- Construction. Seams, stitches, hems and finishes.
- Colors and artwork. A Pantone code for every color, plus the print method, size and exact placement of every graphic.
- Labels and care. Neck label, care label and hang tags.
- Cost sheet and revision log. What each piece should cost, and a dated list of every change so everyone works from the latest version.
Why it matters: Techpacker, which sells tech pack software, says brands that send factories incomplete tech packs average 3 to 5 sample rounds per style instead of 1 to 2. Every extra round costs you time and money.

8 questions before you pay a deposit
Ask every factory the same questions, get the answers in writing, and compare them side by side.
- “Is your MOQ per style, per color, or per style and color?” MOQ is the minimum order quantity. The same number means a very different order depending on how it’s counted.
- “How many sample rounds are included, and what does an extra round cost?”
- “What’s your lead time, and when does the clock start?” Ask which step it’s measured from, so your drop date is real.
- “What are your payment terms?” Know the deposit, the balance, and when each is due.
- “What exactly is in the price?” Fabric, trims, labels, printing, packing and shipping terms. Anything left out is a cost you pay later.
- “How do you check quality, and what happens to defective pieces?”
- “What happens if production runs late?”
- “How do you protect my designs?”
Then approve a sample before bulk production starts. The sample is the standard your order gets checked against.
Drop 9’s RFQ Builder asks these kinds of questions in order and won’t send your request until it’s complete. Then you can compare quotes side by side. Get factory quotes

Term of the week: landed cost
factory price + import duty + shipping/freight + fees = landed cost
It’s what a piece really costs by the time it reaches your door. Compare factories on landed cost, never on the sticker price. Then add what it costs to ship to your customer (Dana’s section has this season’s numbers) before you set a price.
